Liposuction
This very popular procedure is ideal for removing pockets of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise, as well as for re-contouring an area. It is not intended, however, as a method of weight loss. It does not remove large amounts of fat from the body; rather, liposuction acts as an agent to reshape it. Common areas which benefit from liposuction are: the cheeks, the area under the chin, the under-side of the arms, the abdomen, the flanks, the buttocks, the hips, the thighs, the knees, the calves, and the ankles.
Dr. Swanson uses the "wet" technique in which fluid is injected into the intended site prior to suctioning out the fat with the cannula, a long metal tube. The advantage of this technique is less post operative swelling and bruising, less pain and minimal blood loss.
Recovery time will vary depending on the size and number of procedure sites. Despite some noticeable bruising and swelling, most patients will feel fairly well a couple of days after their surgery. For the first few weeks following surgery, each patient will wear a compression garment both day and night. After a few weeks, the patient will only wear the garment during the day. Within six weeks following surgery, this garment will not be needed at all. This garment serves a dual purpose. First, it reduces the patient’s initial swelling and discomfort. Second, it helps the patient’s skin to tighten properly to the body’s new contours. Patients may expect to resume most activities within a week or so. |
