Rhinoplasty (Nose Job)
Rhinoplasty is a procedure that proves that a small change can make a big difference. By reducing the size of the nose, smoothing a hump, or shaping the tip, the nose may be more beautifully proportioned to the rest of the face. Dr. Swanson evaluates each patient’s bone structure, cartilage, and thickness of skin to determine the most appropriate course of action for the most natural result.
Most rhinoplasty surgery is strictly cosmetic and is not covered by insurance; however, if there is a real medical necessity due to congenital defect or injury, insurance may cover at least a portion of the cost.
Because this procedure affects a sensitive area, there can be quite a bit of swelling and bruising around the eyes and nose at first. However, keeping ice compresses over the eyes for the first couple of days will minimize this. Teflon gauze squares in the nostrils, nasal packing and a splint may add to the discomfort for the first few days, but prescribed medications will help to alleviate the symptoms. Once the Teflon is removed, patients feel much more comfortable. The splint must remain in place until it falls off naturally, as it is helping to keep the bones and cartilage in place, protecting the nose if it is bumped. The nose will be free of all stitches and the splint within ten to fourteen days. The recovery process is still occurring, however, and patients must exercise caution while the nose heals. They must avoid strenuous activity and also should protect the nose from bumping, rubbing, trauma, or sunburn for a few months until healing is stabilized
